Overview
The ZXQ-5 is a fully automatic metallographic sample mounting machine, or hot mounting press, with the function of cooling in and out of water. It is suitable for the thermal mounting of all materials, both thermosetting and thermoplastic, and the mounting parameters such as heating temperature, holding time and force are pre-set on the machine.
Mounting is the step that puts a small or irregular specimen inside a plastic mount so that it can be ground, polished and etched without the edge rounding away or the specimen pulling out. The ZXQ-5 automates the whole cycle: once the sample and the mounting material are loaded and the gland is closed, pressing the work button completes the mount without an operator having to stand beside the machine.

Automatic cycle and unattended operation
The heating temperature, holding time and force are all set as mounting parameters before the run, so the machine repeats the same cycle every time. Once the sample and mounting material are in place and the gland is closed, pressing the work button completes the mount automatically, and the operator does not need to be on duty beside the machine – which frees skilled staff to prepare other samples while mounting runs. The heating range of room temperature to 180 °C covers the thermosetting and thermoplastic resins used for routine metallographic mounting, and hot mounting embeds a specimen in thermosetting resin at about 150-180 °C under pressure.
Water cooling, moulds and capacity
Cooling in and out of water shortens the cycle compared with air cooling and gives a well-formed, bubble-free mount; the cooling temperature range is 40-90 °C and the pressure holding time can be set from 0 to 99 minutes 99 seconds, with the system pressure set between 0 and 2 MPa (a sample-preparation pressure of 0 to 72 MPa). Four mould sizes – Ø25, Ø30, Ø40 and Ø50 mm – can be selected and replaced according to the sample, so mounts of different diameters can be produced on the same machine. Two samples can be pressed at the same time, which doubles the preparation capacity.
Applications
The ZXQ-5 is used wherever metallographic specimens must be mounted before grinding and polishing: quality control in steel, casting and heat-treatment plants, failure-analysis laboratories, weld examination, and the teaching and research laboratories of colleges and universities. Mounted samples from the ZXQ-5 are ground and polished on a machine such as the MP-2M, P-2 or P-2T and then examined on a metallographic microscope or tested on a hardness tester.

Selecting and Verifying a Testing Machine
Choosing a machine is a matter of matching capacity to the specimen and the method, not of buying the largest frame. A 1000 kN machine is not suitable for a sample that needs 1 N of force; capacity selection follows the specimen and the standard, and the force measuring system should be verified per ISO 7500-1 or ASTM E4 on a regular schedule. Load cells are commonly supplied as class 0.5 or class 1, which means the indicated force stays within ±0.5% or ±1% of the true force.
